OUR STORY

Chai Advisors: A Brief History

Chai Advisors began with a straightforward observation: most personal finance education available to adults in Thailand was written for a different audience in a different context. The books came from New York or London; the examples used pensions that did not exist here and tax systems that bore no resemblance to the Thai framework. The gap between what was available and what was actually useful to a household in Udon Thani was wide enough to matter.

The practice was founded to close some of that distance. Not by producing new financial products or by offering regulated investment services, but by running careful, small-group educational programmes where participants could work through the foundational questions of household finance at a sensible pace. The name Chai comes from the Thai word for heart — a reminder that money is always in the service of something else, and that the something else is worth attending to as well.

The programmes have been refined over several years of running them in and around Udon Thani. The participant group is adults at or approaching 40, a period when questions about retirement, children's futures, household income, and long-term planning become both more pressing and more complex. The facilitator draws on experience in financial education, an extensive reading background in economics and behavioural finance, and direct familiarity with the Thai household context.

The practice does not employ a sales team. It does not manage investments. It does not receive referral fees. Its sole income is the fees paid by participants for its programmes. This arrangement was chosen deliberately, so that the advice given in any session can be honest rather than convenient.

HOW WE WORK

Standards We Hold Ourselves To

Education Only

We are registered as an educational practice, not as a financial services provider. We do not give regulated financial advice and are clear with participants about this distinction from the first enquiry.

Written Materials

All companion guides, templates, and reading notes are prepared in writing and reviewed before each programme cohort. Participants receive physical copies to take away.

Small Cohort Sizes

We limit each programme cohort so that discussion is genuine. No participant sits quietly at the back. Enrolment caps are set before advertising opens and not exceeded.

Participant Privacy

Financial discussions are personal. We do not share participant information, use it for marketing to third parties, or discuss individual circumstances outside sessions.

Sourced Reading

Books recommended in programmes are selected for their intellectual quality and longevity, not for commercial relationships. Authors and publishers receive nothing from us for inclusion.

Honest Cancellation Terms

Cancellation and refund terms are explained in plain language before enrolment. They are the same for every participant and available in writing at any time on request.

OUR APPROACH TO LEARNING

On the Value of Reading Carefully

Financial literacy, as a phrase, has become so common that it risks becoming meaningless. What Chai Advisors is interested in is something rather more specific: the ability to read a balance sheet, a fund document, or a market commentary with enough competence to know what questions to ask next. That ability takes time to build and does not arrive from a single workshop or a weekend course.

The programmes at Chai Advisors are therefore structured to develop reading habits rather than to convey a list of facts. Each session introduces material that participants are expected to return to between meetings. The companion guides are reference documents, not summaries — they assume a reader who will come back to them.

The approach is also regional in a specific way. Thailand's financial landscape is not identical to that of the United States or the United Kingdom, where most personal finance literature originates. The local regulatory environment, the structure of the Thai provident fund system, the role of family obligations in household planning, and the particular characteristics of the Thai property market all shape the decisions a household here will face. The programmes take these conditions seriously rather than treating them as footnotes to a universal theory.

Chai Advisors works with adults because the questions adults face are different in character from those of younger participants. At 40, a household typically has some accumulated assets, some debts, children at various ages, ageing parents, and a career that may have another twenty years in it or may not. The combination of these circumstances creates a set of planning considerations that require more than a beginner's framework to address usefully.
